Now that training is officially
over we have some time to ourselves again. We should really be spending it
planning our upcoming lessons but Rory and I love a bargain, so with that in
mind we headed back to the American BBQ restaurant for a free meal. It’s their
6th anniversary so to celebrate they were offering free beer, chips
and beef sandwiches! We weren’t really expecting much but as soon as we arrived
we were guided to a table, given cups of beer and minutes later, presented with
some seriously delicious beef brisket sandwiches! After polishing off the beef
and beer (rootbeer for me, obviously) we were then given MORE free food!
We were having such a good and
free time that we stayed until 11.30pm when we decided to head back to the
subway as it closes at midnight. Turns out the subway actually closes at 11pm
and we had missed the last train home. We weren’t too sure what to do but
decided that getting a taxi made sense. However, our lack of Chinese and not
actually knowing where we live made the simple act of hailing a taxi a bit more
difficult. Luckily we had the headquarters address written in Chinese so the
driver took that and agreed to drop up back for 150RMB. We were literally at
the other side of town so £15 was probably a bargain but it’s a lot more than the
20p the subway would have charged us! Driving here is completely hectic; they
don’t stick to their lane, they don’t indicate, they just drive where they
want, when they want! They also stop in the middle of the road, wind down their
windows and ask each other for directions – at least our driver did as he
clearly had no idea where he was going but thankfully we made it home in one
piece and can add our late night taxi through Beijing to our list of Chinese
adventures!
