Lost in Translation, Literally!

Friday 3rd March

Having managed to fit in the Peace Museum on our first day in Hiroshima, we had an empty schedule this morning so we made the most of the opportunity by having a lie in and finally, after checking out, heading on another little adventure to find the number one restaurant on TripAdvisor. Turns out finding little Japanese restaurants isn’t that easy so we settled for the first place we found!

Unfortunately the meals that we ordered, like almost everything in Japan, had a fishy taste! I took a few obligatory bites but once again Rory stepped up and ate everything. Not all heroes wear capes. Some eat gross food for you!

After our disappointing lunch we headed back to the station and unable to believe our luck, we were seventeen minutes early for our planned train but another train, for the same destination, was just about to leave! Thinking on our feet we jumped on the all stops train bound for Osaka. Turns out all stops is an awful lot of stops! Our journey, that should have taken just under an hour and a half ended up taking three hours! Even Rory, the most patient person in the world (if you haven’t already gathered that) was getting frustrated! The next train, while an express wasn’t much shorter and by the time we arrived in Tokyo we were exhausted!

Our first stop was our hotel – the Park Hotel Tokyo was our most expensive hotel (ever) but the views were so worth it! It was like being in Lost in Translation, without the movie stars and the even more expensive hotel. Feeling much better about our busy day of travel we went to get dinner and after seeing the most amazing beef dish and smelling the heavenly BBQ scent, we decided to go in and order. To avoid confusion I even pointed to the picture on the menu. This is where I’d love to say that we had a delicious meal but somehow, despite pointing and speaking to the fluent in English waiter, we ended up with the wrong meal. Fuming doesn’t even cover it. I was in a downward spiral of food rage so really, the less I say about this experience, the better. We spent the rest of the evening, hoping that the amazing view could make up for the rubbish (and ridiculously expensive) meal. I won’t lie, it’s still a bit raw but with time I’m sure I’ll heal and I suppose every other day has been amazing, we were due some bad luck!
